BiographyArtists Statement I enjoy painting people and animals because each personality is a little different and each painting is a new challenge. Marija was born in Croatia and immigrated to Canada in 1968. She is a professional artist in all painting media and subject matter though she specializes in portraiture. Marija was a signature and founding member of the Canadian Institute of Portrait Artists (CIPA) and is a signature status “Associate” member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, (AFCA). Highlights Marija is a signature status "Associate" member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. Marija’s work has won many awards including the “Nicholas de Grandmaison” for Excellence in Pastel; Jurors Choice Best of Show Flat Art, and the Collector’s Choice Flat Art at the Western Art Auction at the Calgary Stampede; First and Third Place at the Art Instruction School of Minneapolis, numerous Federation of Canadian Artists awards, and an award with the Pastel Society of Canada. Marija was also a finalist for Canada’s Immigrants of Distinction Award in 2000 for her contribution to Art and Culture. Her work has been featured in Pastel Artist International magazine, International Artist magazine, The gallerieswest magazine, The Calgary Magazine, The Illustrator Magazine, "The Alberta Flood Rose Project” book; "The Best Of Worldwide Charcoal, Pastel & Pencil Artists Vol. II Book", “The Best of Canadian Pastels” book, Illustrations for the book of poems, "The Other Side of Bridge", ("Druga strana mosta"), in several newspapers, and the Calgary Stampede Western Art Auction catalogues.
